SALALAH: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed the rehabilitation of Raysut Fishing Port in Salalah at a cost exceeding RO 2.9 million, strengthening fisheries infrastructure in Dhofar Governorate and supporting future investment opportunities in the sector.

The project forms part of the ministry’s broader strategy to enhance the operational efficiency of fishing ports and reinforce their contribution to economic growth, food security and the development of coastal communities.

The rehabilitation works included the construction of a new 610-metre breakwater designed to protect the port basin from sand encroachment, sea currents and high waves. A further 250-metre breakwater was built to reduce the intrusion of sand and silt while improving water circulation within the harbour.

The project also involved reclaiming around 34,000 square metres of land earmarked for future expansion and service facilities linked to fisheries and logistics activities.

In addition, a 70-metre fixed pier was constructed to facilitate the berthing of artisanal fishing vessels and support fish handling operations, while a new slipway was developed to improve boat launching and maintenance services.

Engineer Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rashdi, project manager, said the rehabilitation project had reached full completion and would significantly improve the port’s operational readiness and maritime safety standards.

He noted that the works included the construction of 1,000 metres of internal roads fitted with lighting systems to improve traffic movement and safety within the port area. A comprehensive surveillance camera network was also installed to enhance security and monitor operational activities.

Al Rashdi said the project would help reduce sand accumulation inside the port basin, improve navigation efficiency and enable the port to accommodate vessel movement more effectively.

He added that the newly reclaimed area would support future investment and service projects linked to the fisheries sector, enhancing the port’s economic value and strengthening its role as a logistics and development hub.

According to the ministry, fish production in Salalah reached 14,059 tonnes in 2025, with a total value of RO 9.2 million.

Al Rashdi stressed that continued investment in fishing ports remains essential to supporting food security, stimulating economic activity and creating employment and investment opportunities across coastal regions. — ONA
